John Femino, MD

Photographer’s Statement:

Photography has been my passion since high school. I started processing my own negatives and prints in homemade darkrooms and joined our school yearbook and camera club. As an undergraduate at Brown University, I attended the photography program at RISD as an exchange student. After studying for over one year with Harry Callahan as a special student, I was accepted into the MFA photography program at RISD, however, decided to first pursue my medical studies.

Continued from above...

I attended Brown University School of Medicine and produced the first medical school yearbook in 1976. After my internal medicine residency and fellowship in addiction medicine, I joined the faculty as a full time teacher. I incorporated my dual interests in photography and addiction treatment and joined Youth Vision, a non-profit television production company, where we produced 9 substance abuse related videos, had 2 prime time TV broadcasts, and won a cable television ACE award.

Although my involvement in video production and educational product development continues, my personal interests focus primarily on still photography. Most of my photography subject matter has involved nature and family subjects. Because of the demands of a full time medical practice, I have photographed mainly in Rhode Island, usually within a short distance from my farm in Foster or on the beaches in Middletown or Charlestown.

I phased out my conventional color darkroom a few years ago (the only post and beam darkroom and photo recycling system in Foster) and now scan my negatives into the computer with a dedicated high resolution film scanner. I shoot in multiple formats, with 35 mm and medium format cameras predominating. My film cameras have been supplanted by 5 and 8 megapixel digital cameras and my digital darkroom now revolves around my Macs and Photoshop. I use my Hasselblad and 4x5 film cameras for my landscapes and beach photographs.

All of the photographs were digitally processed in Photoshop and printed on an Epson wide format photo printer. The highest archival standards are met throughout print production, including using pigmented inks, archival paper without optical brighteners, hinge mounting on 100% museum rag mat board with archival foam backboard. Photographs can be purchased as a photo only, hinge mounted on museum rag mat board, or framed under glass. It is estimated that these archival materials and presentation methods should allow for at least 80 to 100 years without fading or discoloration and as long as 200 years without significant deterioration.
